Organising Family Gatherings and Celebrations

Family gatherings are the best. They’re a chance to catch up, celebrate life’s ups and downs, and make memories that’ll last a lifetime. But very often, planning and running these events can be a real headache. It’s easy to let clutter and chaos take over. Thankfully, there are some simple tricks you can use to turn your house into a well-organised event space that everyone will love.

Organising Family Gatherings and Celebrations

Planning Ahead

Before the event, it’s important to have a well-thought-out plan. First things first, figure out who’s coming, where you’re having it, and what kind of theme you want. This will help you decide how to decorate, what to eat, and what to play. Once you’ve got that down, you can start thinking about where you’ll store everything.

You could create a dedicated event storage area in your home, such as a spot in your garage, loft, or even a closet/cupboard that you set aside just for party supplies. To make it easy to find what you need, use clear storage bins with labels. And if there’s really no space (especially if you want to keep certain things like gifts hidden) why not consider renting a self storage locker? You’ll find facilities in handy locations in most towns and cities with staff who’re happy to advise.

Storage Solutions for Decorations

Decorations help set the scene for any gathering, but organising them can quickly become a hassle if they’re not stored properly.

Choose Compact Packaging: Look for decorations that can be easily disassembled or are lightweight, like paper lanterns or fabric banners. Store them in strong cardboard boxes when they’re disassembled to save space. Rotate Seasonal Decor: If your family has a tradition of gathering for seasonal events like Christmas or Halloween, set up specific storage bins for each occasion. You don’t even need to keep them in house in between seasons if you’ve got a handy storage locker. Label Everything: Keep a clear inventory of your decorations. Labels not only help you find items quickly but also make it easier to put things back in their designated spots after the gathering.

Food and Drink Setup

Food is the heart and soul of family celebrations, and it can be a real stressor when it comes to catering or cooking. But there are some clever storage solutions that can make things easier. Firstly, pre-organised containers. Invest in a variety of containers for prepped ingredients beforehand, or leftovers for the clean-up. Labelling these containers can save you lots of time during the event. Next, whether you’re indoors or outside, a cool box can be a lifesaver for keeping drinks and perishable items fresh when the fridge is already overflowing. Keep it organised by using dividers or baskets inside for different types of snacks or drinks.

Lastly, while reusable items are great for the environment, it’s not such a sin to consider having a selection of good quality disposable plates and utensils on hand. They don’t have to be plastic and can significantly reduce clean-up time after the event.

Keeping Things Tidy (within reason)

When you’re hosting a family gathering, it’s a given that guests will bring their stuff, especially the little ones with toys, bags, and other necessities.  Set Up a “Guest Zone”: Find a spare room or a corner of the living room and make it a designated area where guests can drop off their bags, coats, and anything else. You could even set up a few baskets or bins for the kids’ toys to keep everything organised. Take Care of Waste: You can never have too many bins when the house is full of merry-makers. Have extra clearly labelled bins for recycling and general rubbish. This might help keep your home cleaner and tidier throughout the event, although there are no guarantees of course.

Post-Event Clean Up

Even with a well-planned family gathering, the clean-up can feel like a daunting task, especially when everything’s all over the place.  Having a designated clean-up crew can make a big difference in how quickly the house gets put back in order. Rope in some helpers as things wind down, whether they’re guests or family. If anyone’s staying overnight, ask them to help get the decorations down and packed away the next day. Your labelled boxes will come in handy so people know where stuff goes.

As you’re clearing up, mentally assess how you stored and arranged everything, taking note of what went right as well as any hiccups along the way. Next time, you’ll have a better idea about what you’re doing and how best to do it.

When your space is tidy and well-planned, you can take your mind off the hassle of hosting big parties and focus on enjoying every moment with your loved ones. You’ll make memories that’ll last a lifetime! So, embrace the joy of organising. The celebrations will be even more special because of it.
