The majority of good students were not born as great learners. Of course, individual personalities play a big part in a child’s willingness when it comes to learning and education, but the truth is that most children who are good learners had to find their way there. More importantly, any child that has the correct motivation and right attitude, can become a good learner. One of the biggest mistakes that is usually made by both parents and teachers when it comes to the development of a child’s academic mindset, is limiting studies to the classroom. Whilst the classroom is the space for primary knowledge, as well as social and academic growth to be developed, these things should also be practiced and extended outside the four walls of a classroom to really enhance a child’s desire to learn. So, where do you begin? Below is a guide on how to motivate your child to learn and discover the joy that it brings.

Help your child develop a love for reading
Many believe that reading is the key to success in life. This is because reading is a method to introduce new knowledge and can help attain success. Remember, there is a pattern to follow. Children who develop a love for reading also develop a love for learning. Similarly, children who struggle with reading will also struggle with learning. Reading is not only there to help develop a richer set of vocabulary, but it also helps the brain learn how to process new concepts. Students who read well, gain an enhanced ability to learn in all subjects including maths and science. Help your child develop their reading skills by filling their world with opportunities to read. Read to your child as much as you can when they are little. As they grow up, you can get your child to read out loud. Create a time and space in the house where the family focuses on reading every day. Through your own practices, you will create an atmosphere and demonstrate the importance of reading to your little one. Be sure to make reading enjoyable and not frustrating. Allow them to pick books up on their own terms and create activities that can make reading seem approachable and fun.
Allow your child to feel in control
One of the main reasons that children don’t enjoy learning, is because they relate it to control. Given that schools have set curriculums in place, many children feel that they are constantly being told what to do and how to learn. Eventually, this can lead to some children withdrawing from learning altogether. As parents, it is important to guide your child through the learning process, as naturally, a child will be more inclined to learning if they feel they have a say in their overall learning experience. A good way to do this is to provide your child with options. For example, if your child has been assigned to complete a project for their science homework, allow them to choose the method to complete this assignment in to give them a sense of control and responsibility over their work. Additionally, you should allow your child to have full control of which extracurricular activities they choose to take part in. This sense of control will teach them to respect their learning environment and lead to a more engaged and motivated child.
Encourage open communication
Create an environment in your home where your child can discuss their thoughts and feelings that surround education. Even if you disagree, allow your child to speak and be sure to validate their feelings. When children feel unheard, it can lead to them disengaging from the learning process. Be present and reassure your child in the times they need it. This will build confidence in them and lead to a child who views learning as something great.
