We bought our first home last year, as you can probably imagine, I already have approximately 700 ideas for what I eventually want to do with it.
The reality is that we are absolutely not at the stage of giving every room a full makeover yet.
There are bigger jobs we want to tackle first, plenty of decisions still to make and, quite frankly, I don’t want to spend all of my time and energy decorating rooms that might end up changing again anyway.
That doesn’t mean I want to spend the next couple of years surrounded by completely blank walls, though.
I’ve been finding smaller ways to make the house feel more like us in the meantime, and working with Desenio has been perfect for this. I’ve added more artwork to my office, along with some gorgeous decorative trays that can move around the house as we gradually work out what we’re doing with each room.

Creating a home without rushing the decorating
I think there can be so much pressure when you first buy a house to immediately make every room Pinterest-worthy.
We’ve very much decided not to do that.
I’d rather live in the house for a while and work out how we actually use each space before spending loads of money completely changing it. There are already things I thought I wanted when we first moved in that I’ve changed my mind about.
Being Disabled also means I have to be quite selective about where my energy goes. I could spend a day painting a wall that I know we’re probably going to redo properly in the future, but if that’s going to leave me flared up and exhausted, it just isn’t worth it.
Smaller additions have been a much better option.
Artwork, plants, decorative pieces and little accessories can completely change how a room feels without turning it into a huge project.
Adding more colour with Desenio wall art
One of my favourite updates so far has been the gallery wall behind my office desk.
I spend so much time working from this room, whether I’m writing, on calls or filming content, and having something colourful behind me instantly makes it feel more like an actual creative space rather than just a desk shoved into a room we’re waiting to decorate.
I’ve gone for a mixture of floral, botanical and abstract wall art with lots of pinks, greens and softer neutral tones.
My gardening obsession has very clearly followed me indoors.
I’ve become ridiculously interested in flowers and plants since moving house, so it felt right to bring some of that into my office too.
Some of my latest Desenio choices include the Leigh Viner Magenta Roses canvas, Monstera Three canvas and the incredibly colourful SpaceFrog Designs Iris Abstract canvas. I also chose the Kit Agar Will Bite canvas, which adds another softer pink piece into the mix.
What I really like is that none of them are exactly the same style, but the colours make them work together.
I don’t particularly like gallery walls where everything looks overly coordinated and perfect. I much prefer that collected-over-time look where different artists, flowers and styles all end up living together.
Desenio has a huge collection of canvas prints, so it was easy to keep coming back to the same pink and green palette while still choosing pieces that looked completely different from one another.
And because I’ve used canvases rather than heavy framed prints, moving everything around again later isn’t going to be a massive job.
Very important when I change my mind every five minutes.
Decorative trays are my new obsession
I’ve also ventured away from the walls this time and ordered some of Desenio’s trays.
I picked the Cheers Tray, two Colorful Garden Trays and the William Morris Willow Bough Round Tray.
Again, absolutely no surprises that I’ve ended up with botanical patterns.
I love home accessories like these because they don’t need a permanent home straight away.
The smaller Colorful Garden Trays could work on a dressing table with jewellery and perfume, on a desk for little bits that would otherwise end up everywhere, or even just propped up as part of a shelf display.
The round William Morris tray is much bigger at 38cm, so that one could easily work on a coffee table or ottoman, while the Cheers Tray is one of those simple neutral pieces that could move from room to room depending on what I’m styling.
That’s exactly the kind of thing I’m enjoying buying at the moment.
I’m not committing myself to an entire colour scheme or permanently changing anything. I’m just slowly collecting things I genuinely love and finding places for them as the house evolves.
Making an unfinished house still feel like home
Our house is definitely a work in progress, and I think it probably will be for quite a long time.
There are rooms that need decorating, bigger accessibility changes we want to make and a very long list of things I would eventually like to replace.
But I’m also trying not to spend the entire time thinking about what the house will look like when it’s “finished”.
Because realistically, is a house ever actually finished?
You paint one room and suddenly the room next door looks like it needs doing. You buy one nice piece of furniture and immediately decide everything around it needs replacing. It’s a trap.
For now, I’m really enjoying making smaller changes that give different corners of the house a bit more personality.
My colourful office gallery wall has made the room so much nicer to work and film in, and the new trays are another easy way to bring the colours and patterns I love into the rest of the house without committing to a complete makeover.
Eventually there will be paint, wallpaper, new furniture and probably several dramatic decorating decisions that I will question halfway through.
For now, though, I’ll happily stick with flowers, plants and pretty things I can move around whenever I fancy a change.
