Let’s look at ways to be kind to yourself this Christmas, and beyond. While most of us spend the Christmas season thinking about how we can make the people around us happy, it is also a great time to take a step back and think about ways to put a smile on your own face. Self care is important all year, but at a time of year where people are stressed and frazzled, it is more important than ever. Here are five ways to be kind to yourself this Christmas and throughout the new year.

Kind to Yourself

Let yourself have the Christmas you want – not the one you’re expected to have

Christmas can be difficult because there are all kinds of traditions and expectations that people feel like they can’t avoid – even if they don’t find that they get much enjoyment from them. Be mindful and decide consciously which activities you would like to participate in, and give yourself the grace of opting out of things that you don’t enjoy. You can make your own rules when it comes to Christmas!

Think about your relationship with therapy

Online counseling or therapy depending on what you want to call it, tends to come in ebbs and flows throughout peoples’ lives – they use it when they need it, and it tends to fall by the wayside when things are steady. However, therapy doesn’t need to be only for when you begin to struggle, and there is value in continuing to see a therapist every week just to have somebody to touch base with and keep some consistency. Christmas is a great time to think about therapy and your relationships – what place it had in your life in the past year, and if you might want to make space for it in the year to come.

Don’t get into debt for Christmas

There is immense pressure to spend a lot of money at Christmas, but there are no rules when it comes to festive spending. If you can’t afford to go over the top, there is no need – there are all kinds of ways to make Christmas special without spending a lot of money. Get a group together and each contribute one dish for Christmas Dinner to keep meal costs low, and organise a fun secret Santa with your friends so that you only have to buy one present and have a great excuse to make time to get together.

If you need to set resolutions, make them small and attainable

Life can get hard when it comes to New Year’s Day, with resolutions flying around and everybody promising to become a brand new version of themselves. This can be even more difficult if the topics of peoples’ resolutions are subjects that you might find triggering, so the best way to look after yourself might be to abstain from resolutions altogether. However, if you are inspired by the chance to make a change in your life, think of a small and manageable change that will add value to your life.

Be Kind To Yourself – Treat yourself to a festive gift

Christmas is the season of loving and giving, so make sure that you remember to extend that festive spirit to yourself. Think of something special that you can do or gift to yourself, to let yourself know that you have done well this year and deserve a special treat. It could be tickets to the theatre, a luxury spa break or even a little weekend getaway to detox your mind and get away from daily life.
